Sometimes called “royal blue pearl granite” or “black moonstone”, larvikite decorates the facades of many historical monuments such as the Berlin Carillon or the Barclays Bank in Athens. This stone is highly prized in jewellery for its beauty and excellent quality. Of magmatic origin, larvikite forms at a depth of 30 km and crystallises near sub-volcanic areas. As a granite, it is very solid, suitable for construction. Larvikite can be both translucent and opaque. Its colour can vary from light blue to dark blue.

The date of discovery of larvikite is unknown but it was formed between 295 and 300 million years ago. The Larvik region in Norway is the main producer of this stone. It is also found in Russia, Mexico and Canada. It consists of more than 90% feldspar, a mineral poor in quartz, containing aluminium, sodium, potassium and silicon.
