Haematite takes its name from the Latin “haematites” which means “blood”, alluding to the red hue found on some stones. This colouration stems from its high iron content. During the Palaeolithic period, the stone was ground into powder for painting. During Antiquity, the Egyptians already understood the relation between haematite and blood circulation.
