Heliotrope jasper derives its name from the Greek “helios”, meaning “sun”, and “trepeinï”, meaning “to turn”. Later, the stone was dubbed “bloodstone”. Pliny the Elder named this stone for the first time. He gave it this appellation because the mineral showed stains of blood on it under the sun’s rays or in the water.
