Pyrite comes from the Greek “pyros” which means “fire”. Its metallic lustre and golden-yellow colour give this stone a gold-like appearance. The similarity is so fooling that during the gold rush in the United States in the 19th century, explorers sometimes thought they found a gold deposit when it was pyrite. Its metallic lustre was prized by the Amerindians, who used it for making mirrors, thanks to its reflective properties. It was utilised as a source of ignition in early firearms in the 16th and 17th centuries. Nowadays, it is used in technological, chemical and civil engineering components such as solar panels and lithium batteries.
